Beta anyone? Don't be afraid to beta release your app
In my corner of the market-- the smartphone and tablet application development corner--I'm seeing a growing, more persistent fear within project managers to hold releasing an app until it's pitch-perfect, 100 percent done. In other words, the software industry seems to have forgotten the purpose of a beta release.
Does your app meet 80 percent of your organization's targeted functionality? If so, you have a beta release. You may be trigger shy about releasing your app, but let me assure you that further delaying the release can substantially harm your business. For example, if your organization operates in a highly competitive space, then holding back your app could mean a competitor getting to market first. Delaying your marketing team's timeline, and consequently your sales team's expected sales, could also greatly diminish the lifetime revenue potential of the app. But, how do you know when to say when and get your app into the market? This will certainly depend on your industry. If you're developing a banking app, you'll want to be very thorough before a beta release, more thorough than, for example, if you're developing a gaming app.
