Looking Back and Moving Forward
The trends in the app and web design world are continually changing. To wrap up the year, we want to take a moment to look back at what we have learned, and move forward into evolving design in the coming year. Let’s take a look at a few of the bigger changes that took place this year:
Less Hamburgers
UX/UI went on a little diet in 2016 and took a step away from the hamburger menu (not the kind you eat – we’d never give up on burgers). The three horizontal lines that indicate a slide-out menu became incredibly popular in the previous year. While this trend was great at the time, we were happy to see a return of the bottom tab menu. With simple usability and large buttons – this navigation is great across multiple devices.
While the limited amount of space may seem like a drawback, a bottom tab menu can simplify your user experience, and keep the temptation to add unnecessary section and functionality at bay. Expect to see more of these in 2017.
Compartmentalize
Channeling Piet Modrian, we saw this web design trend quite a bit this year. Often seen sporting different colors and shapes – this design layout is great for organizing lots of text and imagery. Compartmentalized design isn’t the solution for everyone, but we’re excited to see how this can evolve into a more mainstream look.
Epic Landing Pages
A landing page is often the first impression a user gets of your company’s site. As of this year we’ve seen lots of companies lean more on impressive images, video, and animations to really give their users the “wow” factor they’re looking for. Fullscreen, epic landing pages aren’t necessarily a new trend, however, it is increasing in popularity and we’re looking forward to seeing more of it.
These are just a few trends in the app and web world we’ve noticed in 2016. We can’t wait to see how they evolve and what new trends arise in the coming year!
